The Subtle Accessory You Need This Summer

Earlier this month, jewelry designer Sophie Buhai posted an Instagram of a bare foot donning a sleek silver accessory with a simple message: “Bring back the anklet.” Lo and behold, it seems her request has been heard. Just days later, Lily Aldridge and Behati Prinsloo stopped traffic in L.A. sporting twinning ballerina buns, diaphanous dresses, and, yes, anklets.
Ashley Olsen, too, has been known to decorate each ankle with a barely there gold version, while for Chloé’s Spring collection, designer Clare Waight Keller sent models down the runway in an array of instantly coveted rainbow, knotted, and mesh sandals—many paired with a gold chain loosely tied around the ankle.

Do not, however, be mistaken: Today’s anklets are not a ’90s throwback. No, they do not come with the kitschy dolphin or moody alien baubles of our youth. Rather, they are sleek, subtle, and sophisticated.
Quieter than this season’s statement earrings but equally unforgettable, the anklet is fast emerging as summer’s accessory of choice.
Take a look at Kismet by Milka’s dainty chain adorned with dangling rose-gold circles, which, when coupled with Fendi’s red patent leather slides, works just as well in the boardroom as at happy hour.

Brother Vellies’s Saffron Burkina sandals, topped with an extravagant bow, call for a simple chain, while Shashi’s multicolored beaded take adds a pop to Dr. Scholl’s classic wooden sandals. Ileana Makri’s version, embellished with an evil eye made of green and black crystals, shimmers next to Marques ‘ Almeida’s floral-brocade mules.
And we have no doubt that Alexander Wang’s street style-approved studded sandals will hit star status when paired with a matching silver bell anklet.
Whatever you choose this summer, slide into your sandals, strap on an anklet, and put your best foot forward. Above, a look at seven takes you’ll need this season.
